Thanks for the info guys.
I'm currently diving a mares pegasus back inflated BCD and do not have the whole bp/w with light canister set up.
What will be the best way for me to "store" the excess hose? Assuming I get the 7'. Or will 5' be enough for me to go just under the arms.
I reckon the 7" will be more comfortable but am worried about all the "excess" hose.

Thanks agian

What he said.

And then I bought MORE gear :)

Really, Ben and Rick are right. Replacing the hoses is a small thing. If you are using a traditional BC, you may want to go to a 5' hose, routing it under your right arm, across your chest, around the back of your neck and into your mouth. It's a little easier than the 7' hose to control the slack in a BC, and if you are only doing open water diving, you don't need the full 7' length (which is designed to permit air-sharing in single file).

Of all the changes I made in my equipment and configuration, the one that has actually bailed me out (prevented an accident, or a really bad scare) on multiple occasions is my bungied backup. I've fallen in the water, or gotten rolled in the surf, and there is enormous comfort in the fact that that backup reg is RIGHT THERE, under your chin, where you can't lose it and it takes less than a second to put in your mouth.

I've tried the 5-foot hose and it was always causing a bit of a pull on my primary reg. Switched to a 7-footer last weekend. Much better. If you get the chance try several configurations. With any luck at all you'll be fine-tuning and adjusting for a long time.

BTW - I'm just a serious recreational diver. I have no DIR intentions. I just stand near the punchbowl.

I think this is what TS&M was referring to when she mentioned that a 5' hose works better with most BCs. With a 5' hose, there is no extra hose that needs to be stored under a can light, it just gets wrapped around the body.

When I'm not wearing my can light (in the pool, for example), I just tuck the hose into my waist band. The Pegasus has a larger waist band than a BP, but you should still be able to tuck it in between the weight pocket and your hip. To visualize how this would work, imagine putting the BC on first. Then route the hose under your right arm, up over your left shoulder, and around your neck to your right shoulder. Take up all the excess slack in the hose under your right arm, and make a 'U' with it. Then stuff that 'U' between the weight pocket and your hip so that if you pulled either end, it would come out.

Hope this helps
Tom

Lot's of good advice. I'd definitely hit up a place that was local for the hoses. Stay with a reputable business. Specially when it comes to stuff your life depends on. There are different manufactures of hoses and definitely different quality.

Stay away from K2 Scuba ( K2Scuba - K2Scuba.com ). Most of us in SoCal know that guy and he is trouble. I'd advise people to stay clear of him.

Make sure you read to the end. Oh, and read the profile too. This is what I'm talking about. Buyer beware.

A couple of points from one who has several different variations of the "donate primary" persuasion -- I have a 7' primary/short bungied backup that I use with my doubles & BP/W; I have a 5' primary w/swivel/short bungied backup that I use with my single & BP/W; I have a 40" primary/AirSource that I use with my SeaQuest balance. All work just fine.

There are two keys to the concept that people seem to miss because they get all focused on the length of the stupid hose.

The first key is that whatever reg you use to donate, the hose MUST BE LONG ENOUGH to permit the donee & donor to be able to safely (and comfortably?) get to the surface. That is why the "octo hose" is longer than the primary on a "regular" setup. Just by switching the two hoses you would now be in the same situation as the "regular" diver -- donating the longer hosed reg and breathing the shorter hosed reg.

BUT, if you get a new hose for the donating reg, you then have some more options:

40" hose routes either over or under your shoulder but doesn't wrap around the neck;

60" hose (5') routes under the arm and wraps around the neck -- for most OW diving, it is, actually, a bit of overkill unless you have a buddy like I do who lets me sip on her air sometimes;

84" hose (7') routes under something on your waist belt and then wraps around your neck -- for OW diving it IS overkill unless you have a scooter or some REAL reason to want your buddy 6+ feet away from you while breathing your gas.

Don't miss the forest for the trees. The key is, if you donate your reg/gas to someone, can they, and you, swim comfortably and safely to the surface? About the only way this doesn't happen is when you donate a 24" (or shorter) hosed reg!

I started out with a 7" hose and never looked back. I like the set-up with both single and double tanks. There is a lot to be said for having that extra freedom when working on OOA scenarios, and for how streamlined you can make everything.

With the Pegasus you might have a bit of a problem tucking that extra 2' of the 7' hose, so you might want to use the 5'. Same concept and it works well. Good luck and happy diving!!!

I really hate to be the grasshopper correcting the masters, but semantics matter when describing things to people that haven't seen it IRL....

The 5' and 7' hose routes behind your neck, not around your neck.

Jay, I have a 40" hose with a 90 degree elbow (not a swivel elbow, see my gallery) that routes under my right arm, I also have a 7' hose that routes as described. I think a 5' hose may be the best long hose solution if you don't already dive a BP/W.

Back to lurking....
