Hello everyone out there !!!

I have just discovered Scubaboard and I am simply amazed to find this community of people who are sharing a treasure trove of experience ,information ,and love for diving!!!! If I had known of this board I would have joined much earlier.

I am based in Malaysia and have been diving regularly since 85. I stopped logging my dives years ago but if I were to count I should have somewhere in the region of 1500 dives. Most of my diving has been in Malaysia and in South East Asia. Very fortunate that we have dive sites which I believe would rate among the best in the world. I would love to dive in other places outside the region but I suspect that I share the same obstacles as everybody out there - time and money !

I like to think that I know about diving in South-east fairly well and would be happy to share this with anyone who would like info about diving in Mlaysia, Thailand, Indonesia,
Phillipines.

tzeyap,

Welcome to the board! You certainly are lucky in the type of local diving you have.

Just thought you would want to know that the "thumb's down" icon is typically considered a negative or bad vote. The opposite "thumb's op" icon is considered a good vote. I'm not sure if this is an American thing or what.

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know you with time.

Thanks for the tip. I am aware that thumbs down normally is suppose to be negative .
Is that how it is used at scubaboard.

I picked it becos it signals going down and I'm getting into Scubaboard as if commencing a dive !

Thanks for the welcome . Really looking forward to making new friends !!!

There you go....I saw the thumbs down and thought it would be a post about having a lousy internet connection in Malaysia!!!!!

I glad it's not and welcome to the board! I've done a bit of diving in Malaysia in Tioman. I loved it and am longing to go back there again sometime.

HI Mel,

Happy to hear that you had a good time in Malaysia. Borneo Divers is an excellent outfit. Very experienced and professional. While you were there you might have heard of Sipadan and Layang Layang . Absolutely awesome ! Several encounters with hammerheads there. May be going to sipadan in a couple of weeks.

I'm in Johore Baru which is in West Malaysia ; about 2.5 hour flgiht from Sabah. Good diving within 2 hours drive but nothing like sipadan.

Good to hear from you

Hi Kim,

tioman is my local dive. Have been diving tioman every year for the past 20 years and still plan to do so. If you are planning to go tioman contact me and I will provide you with list of good dive sites

Cheers

Hi Laurens,

You sent me alot of links and buttons .I don't know what it all means as I am new and have not yet figured out how to move around this extensive site !

Yeah, I absolutely loved the time we spent in and around Kota Kinabalu. I have heard great things about Sipidan, but couldn't make it work on my trip. Actually, I heard that they closed Sipidan - you can still dive there, but you have to go out of Mabul b/c it is now a park - is this correct?

Mel,
Yeap, the government has closed down all operators on Sipadan but diving on day trips is still permited. It's a good thing really cos' I first dived Sipadan in '87 and You'll have to spend several hours with me if I were to tell you about it. Absolute paradise !!!
Cousteau rated it No. 1 !!!!

since then it has deteriorated somewhat from over diving and 'development' . Hopefully moving the operators out will in time restore it to its former glory which I had the good fortune to see.

Mabul is a great resort. Professional operator and great food !!!

If you have the opportunity to dive Sipadan, DON'T MISS IT !!!!

Personally I am hoping to make it to the Galapagos one of these years. However it is a real trek for me and the cost for me to make it will be around $8 -10 K. Still hoping
