I was sitting around last night logging the dives that I did this weekend, and wondering about a few things...

-Are there any good, free, websites that one could recommend to keep my log online or a service to download the program to my computer? I don't really like my dive log. I dive a computer, and my log is more set up for diving tables. If you keep your log on the computer, do you print it out to keep in a log book also?

-How often have you been asked to show your log book before diving?

Also, for the record, I always carry my logbook with me, but it's never been checked.

As I'm sitting here writing this, I'm thinking of a few questions about logbooks... and a poll could give quick, visible, answers to what people experience. I think I'll add a poll. Thanks in advance for participation. I think the results may be interesting.

One free site is www.diverecord.com . It is the one I use

I've never had my log book checked, but I keep it for other reasons.......say I wanted to do an 80' freshwater dive in my full 6.5 mm farmer john/top and hooded vest. I can go into my logbook and see how much weight I used last time, and if it was enough or too much. I can also check to see how many PSI I used in a certain period of time. I also record visibility and temperature for later reference. It definitely comes in handy.

All my dives are on my PC and computer. I lose my paper log books.

I've never had anyone ask to see my log book, everywhere I have been in australia, vanuatu, Phuket or PI has accepted my dive cert card as enough so far.

Me too. I'm constantly changing between fresh and salt water. I use a drysuit with 3 different variations of underwear and 3 different wetsuits. I'd never remember what lead to use with what configuration without my logbook.

I also started blogging my dives. I use it to add another element to my record. Pics and videos all in one place to share with my buddies. There's a link in my sig.

I log all my dives for me, not to show. I've been diving 23 years and about 3 times, places have asked me for my logbook. When I offered to go to my car to retrieve it, they declined. So while some places have asked, no one has ever required they see my log, even though I've offered to get it.

I also use diverecord.com.

My log is also for my own use. As well as keeping technical info about equipment I used, I draw maps and note anything I found interesting or unusual both underwater and on the boat/shore. A dive diary of sorts. I also download my profiles.
I have only had one dive op actually look at my log. It was on Oahu, just a few months after I became certified. Probably because we were doing a deep dive (below 100 ft) and then a drift dive in ripping current.
