I got signatures until I went through AOW then stopped being "anal" about it. I may get someone to sign it if on vacation, and I like the "insta-buddy" or for milestone dives, or anything training related.

But I just don't get them anymore. I don't think there's anything official about them that's required...

In 160 post-OW-training dives, I can't recall anyone ever even wanting to look at my logbook, much less checking on signatures.

Nonetheless, I have them all, though I'm beginning to wonder about continuing to bother. Anybody who has been my buddy is who I've asked to sign, insta-buddy, regular buddy, or a DM if I was hanging out with one for a whole dive.

I'll always log dives because I want the information for my own use, but the signature thing has not amounted to anything and by my observation, most divers don't seem to bother.

my students, buddys, pretty much have myself or buddy sign every dive
keeps memorys fresh and builds a good habit of reviewing each dive
i like the idea of a personal diary-able to share info when facts get fuzzy...
"i remember last year sonny, it was 17 below* in april when our open water check out class..."
have fun

I think the buddy's signature counts....but at the end of the day there is no Scuba inquisition.
You can fake the logbook if you want to...but why would you?

Logbook is just to keep track of your dives...why would you want to lie to yoursefl

Relax. The TSA hasn't started frisking our logs yet.
I update my log book by plugging my computer into my laptop. I'm far from being the only person who does this. There are no signatures at all. My logbook is a way for me to jog my memory about gear, events, sights, sites, and conditions. The SCUBA police need a warrant to search it. :)

except for ow & aow, i've only had one person sign my logbook, because he insisted. logs are personal, so if it's important to you, get signatures. if not, don't. if logging is important, do it. if not, don't. just realize that some dive ops or classes might request/require a logbook review & if you don't have one, you'll have to come up with some other way to show your competence.

Yeah, nobody's ever checked my log book yet--not even for Rescue class. Or to start DM class. So the only reason that it is important (maybe...) --other than for your own interest-- is when classes require a certain number of dives. No charter has asked me yet, though I've read that it can happen. Nothing I know of says that it matters whether the signature is from an LDS DM, Master Instructor or the guy just completing OW dive #5. I try to get a signature when possible-- anal, I guess. It seems a good idea to get the person's cert. # or phone #/email, etc. in case the need of proof ever does arise.

I solo most of the time and even when I do have a buddy I sign either "solo" or just who I was with. And just like all of the other post most of the time its just for your own record.

I keep a very detailed log book but it is just for my knowledg. And maby when Im old and grey I'll have something to tell my grandkid's haha.

So keep your log book as you want it not as others would have it. And have fun Diving!
