Anyone heading to Loch Low Minn on Saturday (12th)? I was thinking of going in the afternoon, I need to get some shakedown dives in with some new gear. PM me if interested.

Octotat,
A bunch of us Lake Lanier Looney Birds will be up there this weekend.

I'll look for you, how do I spot you? Is there a Looney Bird Pennant that you fly? I'll be driving a silver diesel jetta wagon, and probably won't be up there until after noon or so.

I was thinking about checking it out this Saturday also but need someone to dive with. What time were you planning on getting there?

I'm only wearing a 3mm so my maximum depth may be limited due to the thermocline, or so I'm told. Are the paddlefish hard to spot there? From what I've read in other threads here apparently they can be tough to find and I'm wondering if they might be even tougher to spot if you're not going too deep.

Any info about the place from those familiar with it (thermocline, viz, difficulty of spotting a paddlefish etc.) .

I'm told it's better to get there early and was planning to get there around 9 and see who I can 'tag along' with. Feel free to PM me.

Well, I was up there on Saturday. Saw a bunch of paddle fish almost immediately, just past the ~30' dive platform at a depth of about 35' in the area where the 'grass' on the bottom approaches the dark hole where the trench is. Great viz in the first 30 to 40 feet. Didn't see much other fish though (a bass here and there, sunfish etc.). There are a bunch of friendly catfish that hang out in about 1' of water near the shore entry (obviously they're used to being fed there!).

I was there most of the day and saw only several groups of OW divers doing certification dives with an instructor and two groups of tech divers doing some sort of training.

Saw no "Lake Lanier Looney Birds" so I guess they must've gone on Sunday?

I'd definitely recommend it to those considering. I drove three hours there and back to check it out and was not disappointed.

[I seem to be chatting with myself here, but that's OK...]

sbtag, I work there about once a w/e per month. Let me know the next time you come in, I may be doing some fun diving (and not working). I'll show you around the quarry.

Don't worry about talking to yourself, I do it all the time. I'll be working there this w/e.

FWIW, the water will clear considerably when the fall approaches. I'm really looking forward to diving the quarry this winter, talk about clear!! We've had some really good viz, (in excess of 60') but the rain and bloom took it down. The paddle fish have been exceptionally active. I normally saw/see them in the 15-20' range, but I've been seeing them in the 50-60' range. I'll dive my old 3/2 down into the trench (55-59*) and it is not that bad. LOL Personally I think the hood is the secret.

Thanks Mitch, I appreciate that. I will definitely let you know the next time I'm heading up there.
