Living in Hawaii?

Well wish me luck!! I'm applying for a position in Hawaii this week and should know by the holidays. I dive a lot here in So Cal and I'm an hour from the ocean. I can only imagine how much I'd be diving if I lived in Hawaii.

It would be $1200 more a month but I'm sure I'll spend half or more of that to cover the increased cost of living. I'd be in honolulu so hopefully there's some good dive operators there. I've never been diving in warm water!!

After spending a couple weeks in Maui at the end of the summer I can tell you that I'd do just about anything to go back and never leave. As far as diving, I did 2 days of boat diving and every other day shore diving and had a much better time from shore. I would assume that there is plenty of great shore diving around Oahu as well.

Warm, unbelievably clear water and an incredible abundance of beautiful life = paradise.

My sister lived there for a few years. It was an adjustment for her. She felt some resistance being a haole boss. After 36 months there she lost her job, and couldn't find an appropriate replacement there. Ended up moving to SoCal. She always talks about how she really want to move back though. Cost of living, and lack of jobs makes it hard though.

Sounds like you have a gig almost lined up so your set. When I was out there visiting we didnt get to dive but got to snorkel and I saw some of the biggest tangs I have ever seen. Big Naso tangs swimming right up to me, bigger then dinner plates. Its great

Be prepared for some adjustment. Remember WORKING in paradise is ALOT different than visiting paradise. Be prepared to look for night work or have one or more room mates. Have more room mates than you need as one or more will always be looking for work and not be able to pay at the end of the month. It's a hard place to do business like we main landers do business. I lived on Maui for a year once. It was quite expensive, so much so that most of the locals seemed to need two or more jobs to support themselves. There is little culture in the islands and obviously not too much room to move around in, so I always felt that the ability to come back to the mainland a few times a year (something we couldn't afford to do) would have help offset the "island fever" my wife got. Also, as a haole, I experienced actual racism, something that has never happened to me before or since.

Hawaii is a wonderful place, but as previously mentioned, when you live there you bring with you all the attendant day-to-day crap that you have back home. A job, bills, money issues, etc., etc., etc.
