You read the thread correctly. The bottom line is: different strokes for different folks.
Do what makes the most sense to you.
I have never met anyone in a third world country who refused a tip or found it insulting when it was offered. I do agree that bringing clothing, books and over the counter medicine (to give as gifts to the locals) is very appreciated.
Resort owners perpetuate the myth that offering money to staff is an insult. They want you to leave a lump sum in a jar or box, which will be distributed when you are not there. Unfortunately, some owners keep the money and the staff never sees a penny. This is vile behavior. Don't be fooled by propaganda that serves the rich at the expense of the poor.
