I am looking for a liveaboard that both my non diving spouse and I will both enjoy. She enjoys snorkelling but probably not every day. Is there a liveaboard that also does a fair bit of other activities? Last February I did (by myself) a Blackbeards and they 100% delivered what was advertised but now I think I would prefer a few more amenities. Any suggestions?

I have not been on one, but my son and I will be on the Cuan Law in August.

My first plan was to take the entire family 2 non divers along with us. My research for non divers lead me to the Cuan Law out of Tortola. Our non divers are not coming because of a schedule problem, but I am sure they would have had a great time.
bvidiving.com check them out. I'll have better information at the end of August as we are on board Aug 20- 26.
Good luck.

I would not suggest a liveaboard for a non-diving spouse. Don't do it!!!!!

Agreed. I've heard you will either return home with a spouse that dives, or you will come home single.

:-)

Most liveaboards are there for one reason and one reason only--diving. Most have three activities--eat, sleep, and dive. Maybe there may be one shore excursion during the week. Snorkeling may not be an option because of the depth of dive sites, depends where you're diving. If you're doing a trip to, let's say the BVI's, a site called "The Indians" would be good for snorkeling; however, if you do sites in the Turks-Caicos, most dives start at the top of the reef in about 50-60 ft--not great for snorkeling. Unless your spouse likes reading and just lounging most of the time, I wouldn't recommend a liveaboard for her/him. My $.02

That sounds like a win/win situation to me.

Oh, and I agree with the www.cuanlaw.com suggestion. Unlike most warm water liveaboards, the Cuan Law only offers 3 dives a day, but they also offer a lot of non-diving activities that traditional liveaboards don't offer, like water skiing, beach excursions, hobie cats, and you can help sail the Cuan Law herself. I'm planning on taking my family on the Cuan Law next summer.

A caveat to the above advice would be to ask your wife how much she likes just being on a boat. Some people (myself included) are happy to be on, around, near, under, or in the water - whatever it takes and have no qualms about the idea of sitting on a boat for a week or so with nothing to do but look at the water and read a bit. Granted, personally, I'd rather be diving, or at least snorkeling, but if circumstances (pregnancy, sinus infection, or the like) keep me out of my gear, I'd still rather be on the boat than on the shore!!

I agree with this, it's going to depend on the person.

Are you looking for amenities, or activities? There's lots of liveaboards that offer more amenities than Blackbeard's (most of them actually.) If someone isn't diving and doesn't want to be cooped up on a boat, needs "stuff" to do, it's not a great idea to be on any liveaboard except maybe for one like the Cuan Law. But if someone likes to be on the water and is happy swimming & snorkeling, loafing or hot tubbing, reading or watching movies, walking a few steps to meals with no decisions or effort to be made, a week of that might be paradise for them.

Thanks for the help, Cuan Law looks very interesting. I will research that and see if she is interested. From the activities they show on their website it seems we would both have a good time. She does enjoy relaxing and reading in the sun. If that was followed by the activities shown on Cuan's site it could be just right. Has anyone done Cuans with a non diver?

Funnily enough I've been twice on 6 day liveaboards in Thailand and both times someone had a non-diver with them (actually, on one it was two people)

There really didn't seem to be a problem. The non-diver just sunbathed, did a bit of snorkeling, read a book etc. It probably depends on the person but some people obviously have no problems.
