I have heard of some liveaboards that do but only in port or by satellite. And that is expensive. Some have none at all. Satellite time can be 10-15 dollars a minute on some systems. People usually just wait til they get to port where they then get on their laptops "like addicts on meth" according to one frequent liveaboard diver I know.

Matt - if you are on a liveaboard, you are usually too busy diving eating or sleeping to even think about the internet. And most other divers might rag on you constantly if you talk about it. We had a guy on one liveaboard trip who was unhappy that he couldn't watch ESPN on tv every day between dives.... his wife even said she was ready to throw him overboard by the end of the trip.

That said, I have heard that some liveaboards have limited internet at some points during dives. The Kona Aggressor is one, and I think maybe some of the other Aggressors in the Caribbean now how access at times during the trip. It all matters how far you are from shore and towers.

Is there such a thing as a live-aboard with Internet?:admingreet:

As addicted as I am to scuba diving, I'm even more addicted to the Internet. :)

The Cayman Aggressor had internet for most of the trip except the crossing between Grand Cayman and Little Cayman. The speed was good except when everyone on the boat tried to connect at the same time. It was a wireless connection and it only worked in the main room, so no surfing from your room or on the sun deck.

I too would appreciate a listing of boats with internet access... so that I can avoid them!

Well, somebody sitting at a computer doesn't really affect you, does it? :internet:On the other hand, I absolutely do not want to be a week on a boat with a television blaring a football game. So I'll need to make sure not to go on a live-aboard that has a TV. Another thing that comes to mind, is music. If there were music playing, that might really bother me. If I had to listen to rap music, I think I might just jump overboard -- without my gear.

I try to get online when I can if I'm away from my business for a long while, like on a liveaboard, and what I've found the most useful is a 3G connection with a personal hotspot through my phone. I leave a vacation message and answer only emails that are critical, though, because I'm so busy diving and looking at fish books.

We had internet a lot of the time on the Tala. We only lost it when we were way offshore. You could tell when we had it, because all of a sudden the salon was full of people with laptops :)
