I use wire ties (zip ties) to avoid metal to metal connections. They aren't break-away, but I can cut them with a knife or shears.

I had used zip ties around things to hold an o-ring to a bolt snap.
My cavern instructor pointed out that they have a tendancy to break when you don't want them to [which has happened], and to prevent that with bigger o-rings, they don't seem to want to break when you want them to.
I tested 'em out when I was taking off a lot of my bolt snaps recently, and sure enough, I couldn't tug to break 'em.
Since you'll have to cut 'em anyway, might as well just use cave line.
