Hey ACR, pick up a copy of the DIY light guide from airspeedpress.com. Used is also a good option. I'm taking both options, I picked up a used DiveRite 10 watt HID can light with the old school gel cell battery dirt cheap, and am doing a DIY NiMH battery conversion.

I'd second (or third, or fourth) the recommendation for a bright, focused LED backup light, if you can't afford a primary. The LED PT is an excellent light; the Salvo Rat is very bright, but perhaps not quite as focused. Good for caves for perhaps not so perfect for murky open water.

On the other hand, there are canister lights that are more reasonable. I have a buddy who has the Dive Rite 10W, and it's plenty bright enough and focused enough to use; the fixed focus Salvo 10W is even brighter, and not very expensive.

OneBrightGator, I think Randy43068 was getting at what's right for you might not be right for the next person (or I'm missing something).

I don't think you are missing anything and yes personal experiences are not necessarily applicable for the next guy. But, hey this is a FORUM, Randy43068, and by definition a forum is for sharing personal experiences. This is how we learn or should learn - from other peoples' mistakes or successes and hopefully not from our own mistakes. Personal mistakes could be very costly in our sport.
Cheers.

diverite led 500, relatively cheap $360 and pretty bright 500 lumens, not too big 18cm and can add a cord if you want a smaller head unit/canister set up...or led 300 should be able tp get one of those real cheap given they were replaced by the 500 at the same cost as the original 300...

Which is all fine... if you actually have the experience to back it up. See, I've done cave dives on a few different lights, including a UK D8. In fact, I got the idea from my full cave instructor who has done quite a few dives on one. So to have someone who I don't believe is even cave certified jump in and say it's unsafe is beyond ridiculous.

I have a Salvo 10 watt hand held. It seems a bit of an overkill for night dives, so perhaps it could be considered a cheap alternative primary light for caves and wrecks?

The Dive Rite 10 watt Sunspot is currently on sale for only $499, which includes a Goodman handle and Storm case. You can search here for a Hot Deal on that offer. Thanks.
