It's possible but you need blue split fins to do it. If you only have black split fins you can spray paint them blue and then they will work just fine.

But again I would stress what Lynn said about staying still: It seems really hard for beginners to learn that you don't need to move AT ALL. Learn to keep you legs and feet still as much as possible, also learn at an even earlier date not to have you hands/arms aound ever (unless on surface in distress or at spa bar ordering a drink).

Divers are like toddlers. You invest a little time and a breeze of effort teaching them how to move around, then have to invest lots of concentrated effort & frustration trying to re-educate them to stay still.
