Actually, when he said "or any other equipment" that included Aqualung, Seaquest and Suunto. It's kinda a catch all phrase.

Of course Aqualung and others are going to say to only buy from an authorized dealer. They make the most money from those dealers and want to keep them happy. This unauthorized dealer bs reminds me of the terrorist or swine flu boogeyman that we are told we should be petrified with fear over.

I agree with you MKUTYNA. Aqua Lung, Scuba Pro and the rest of the manufacturers are playing these charades with their internet disclosures in order to placate their dealers. They know full well what channels are supplying LP and obviously do nothing to stop the practice. As has been stated on these boards many times before by attorneys, the manufacturs are still liable for product liability whether the products are purchased from LP or whomever and have a major interest in honoring recalls, etc. I have a room full of scuba equipment, skis and other assorted sporting goods and I cannot tell you the last time I had a warranty issue. I have realized 30% savings from LP in the past when the mood struck without incident. That being said, I still purchase most of my gear from my favorite LDS's because I like them...

Can't speak for the day/night thing, but I have often heard that if you call them up and haggle (providing you are buying a decent wadge of stuff), you can negotiate a lower price than if you just take the screen price from the website.

Never tried it (to be honest their prices are low enough for me - gift horse in the mouth and all that), but I have heard that repeated often enough.

I have bought from Scuba.com in the past and have had good results. I have never bought from LP but not to say i wouldn't. There was a case on a bc one time that was sold on LP but the bc was not made by the label on the bc. It was a knock off aftermarket that was not only copy right fraud but also design. The bc failed on a dive and the person called the maker only to find out that they didn't make the bc. It went to court and LP claimed they didn't know it was not the real deal. This is where you run into things on the gray market, but if you are careful and know what you are buying and want to actually purchase an affordable product then buy from LP. I have heard good things about them. I am thinking about getting a Scubapro G250V MK17 from them. They are so much cheaper. I have spoken with several dive shops and divers about the whole gray market issue and it seems as though the companies are trying to control the market rather than saling wholesale. Doesn't seem to make sense to me but then again that's why LP is here. That's my two cents

I buy stuff both online and at the LDS. My decision is usually based on 1) does my life depend on it; and/or 2) is the LDS completely out of line on price. I usually get things like regulators and BCDs at the LDS. Most everything else can be purchased online, and given how I feel about the government thieves in California, TAX FREE.

The funniest part about my last LP purchase, two Ikelite DS-160 strobe batteries, is that they arrived packed in Adorama bubble wrap.

Leisure Pro pricing is at best deceptive.

For the MSRP for an Uwatec Tech 2G is $452 and dealers can sell it for $10% off that price - a real world LDS street price of $406.80

However Leisure Pro claims the list price is $564, then lists an "our price" of $449.95.

Finally, they list a "sale price" of $324.95 and claim a savings for the customer of $239.05 and 42%, but they ae only getting those "savings" by creating an imaginiary list price over $100 higher than the actual MSRP.

Deceptive - Yeah, maybe.

Well, the net result (no pun intended) is the perpetuation of the "I can get the same thing $239 cheaper at LP" type of posts - drives the perception that online dealers are much less expensive than LDS pricing than is actually the case.

As to "who cares about deception" I'll simply say that I'd never buy an item from a dealer that lied to me about the price - whether it was the MSRP or the final selling price wouldn't matter to me. Either way, they're purposely misleading you in an effort to get you to buy from them.

Wondered how long it would be until the thread became "On line vs LDS" or "Leisure Pro is grey market and no one but them will service" - it happened fairly early in the thread.

As to the OP's original question, I have experienced calling Leisure Pro and the price quoted by a live person lower than the on line or even e bay price; so call before you make a decision - also can say nothing but good things about LP.

I don't care how a seller gets to the final price, its the bottom line that I care about. But do agree the practice of adding $$$ to the "MSRP" is a little sleazy.

In the spirit of this somewhat hijacked thread, shop where you wish; its your money, LDS or e commerce, its your decision.

But my philosophy has always been to give my LDS a chance, and if they are close (say w/in 10% or so) in price they get the business.
