Hi all,

Me and my friend are going to be heading over to the Bahamas next month to learn to go Scuba diving. We've both never done it before so we're going to do the PADI 4 day Open water cert course.

Has anyone done this kind of 4 day course before, how intense is it and is it difficult to pass?

http://www.dive-bahamas.com/pages/di...pen-water.html

I have read loosebits thread "To those considering an OW class..." and I would like to continue the course when I return but I don't think we'll be able to fit it in before we head off.

Thanks for your help.

You will have an exceptional experience diving with Stuart Cove. Dylan was my Instructor for Wreck/Shark Certification. As long as you focus and not party too much you should have a great time! Good Luck :D

Excellent Excellent!!! Thats just what I wanted to hear. We've decided that this is not a partying holiday but an adventure one, but of course we can have a couple of beers ;). There's plenty of places closer to home to go partying to! :D

Thanks for the reply!!

You will be fine. It is not a difficult course to pass. If you have trouble with a skill an instructor will help you out. If he doesn't notice and you point it out to him he will most likely spend extra time on the next dive with you working on that skill. The more you put into the course the more you will get out of it. Since it is only a 4 day class the instructor will not be able to cover every little thing in the book so it will help you a lot to read the book. You can skip over all of the padi adds in the book, I know there are a bunch. I learned to dive not to long ago, last december to be exact, and it has become a great passion for me and I hope you thouroughly enjoy your trip. It is a whole other world under water.

If you are naturals you can be certified in 4 busy days. You will not be prepared to enjoy diving at home.

Thanks for both of your helpful replies. WhitmanDive can I buy that PADI book before I go in a local book store/internet?

And yes I agree with you spectrun, I know the waters around Ireland will be totally different conditions than in the Bahamas. I'll intend on doing more lessons here to get used to the conditions. I have found a great place to go down in Kerry

Looks good.

Works for me, have a great adventure! Some who have gone down your path did well by coming home to do AOW to advance their training and accomplish their local /cold water orientation.

Yes I believe you can buy the book before. The course cost in the Bahamas may include the book so if you buy it beforehand you may be able to talk to them to subtract that price out of the course cost because you won't be getting the book from them. It is also possible that the course doesn't include the book which would work too. I know that in Florida when I did my AOW i bought the book beforehand as well as my nitrox book but I am not entirely sure about the Open Water class. Hey Pete how is it going up there in that cold maine water. Wish I had gotten a couple more dives with you guys when I was up there, sure beats quarries down here. The AOW in cold water is a great idea in my opinion. I am really looking forward to taking a Rescue class down here in MD to get used to some of the diving around here. Haven't gotten many dives here. Have fun with your course Mick, it was a life changing experience for me and I wasn't on as good a reef as the Bahamas ;)

We're still just a few degrees of of our summers best so the water is nice. Hurricanes are making visibility and seas a bit of a pain and short days are limiting the weeknights to night divers.

Will we see you again next summer?

Pete
