I would highly recommend something like sidemounting.com if you are bound and determined to go it alone, though I would add that supplementing online training with an instructor would be ideal. I subscribed to this site about a year ago and found just in the sidemount topic there were around 72 clear concise videos from every bit of it.....setting up gear to techniques in the water. I went through these a few times and then got the opportunity to train with Joe Seda in Florida that is part of this system. If you just cannot possibly get to an instructor, these videos are clear, concise and will get you pretty squared away before you get wet for your practice with your buddy.
