I would use just enough to make the o-rings shine. If you glob it on you may get grease pushed into your pressure guage, and that can't be good for it.
 
Unless the hydraulics shop is experienced with repairing LIFE SUPPORT EQUIPMENT

I have been told that a hydraulics shop can chop off the end and crimp on a new one for very little money. I have a leaking hose myself :) I have no tried going to any shops, mainly because I just was told of this yesterday....try calling a hydraulics shop near you and ask.
 
If the hydraulic shop was experienced in other applications such as auto brake lines... I mean, we all rely on our brakes, don't we?

However, in response to the OP, I think Cancun Marks assessment was correct. The leak might be somewhere else and it would be easier to just change the whole hose.
