"I heard it in a dive shop". Yea, another good policy.

Considering the dive shop owner is an EE, and that I personally know the source of the information, I agree - it is a good policy. :D

Sweet deal. Is that available to all customers of that shop or do you have an insider arrangement?

??? No, it's not an "insider" arrangement. It's what happens when you spend the time to develop a relationship with a LDS. Everyone benefits.

I said heard it "in a dive shop" not from a "dive shop owner". There are plenty of DMs, DM wanna-bes, and just plain counter clerk in dive shops all too willing to spread their opinions as the gospel. This goes back to what I said about considering the source.

Maybe with your LDS, clearly not the case with many others else we wouldn't be having this discussion, would we? In fact, it serves as example that LDS prices do not have to be high for an LDS to succeed.

You might speak with the many other LDS advocates here saying the LDS has to charge high prices because they deal in lower volume and have greater overhead and have to subsidize classes and air fills.

I was thinking along the lines of the seven deadly sins being the downfall of high prices.

But your explanation works for me, too:D

reefhound, where do you go diving, by the way?....looking for dive buddies?

ScubaToys is a fantastic LDS...I was waiting for someone to bring this up. I was shy;)

I am in the trolling league?:mooner: How is my batting average?:D j/k

That wasn't the context I used the phrase in. I don't ask just any Joe in the dive shop, just as I wouldn't trust the info gleaned from a google search. Only from people I personally know is my policy (or as I also previously stated, know the source).

Why? I've sold my business and I'm now retired. Running a business is like sex. You can't explain it, you have to experience it! :D

To repeat a previous comment: There is room for both LDS and online shops. The LDS that is trying to rape customers won't last (as is true in all business). Have the challenges changed for the LDS? Certainly. But that's business - adapt or die. It's the oldest rule in business. Nothing is static.

ok...good point....I can agree. I shut my trap..now:D

:rofl3: Actually, twice. But understand that you don't get to the exit strategy portion of the plan without spending 20+ years working at it. Sex? Only three or four times.... per week! :D :D

BTW, I can't take credit for the comparison of business to sex. It was given to me many years ago by a SCORE volunteer. It stuck with me because it is soooo true. It's odd how often folks who have never started/run a business chime in to tell you how to run your business (btw, I'm not referring to anyone or anything here - no hurt feelings please).

Oh, please don't do that. :D This topic isn't as simple as "All LDS are thieves" vs "Support your LDS". Both are horrible generalizations. I do business with those that earn my business - I'm a very demanding customer. My LDS has earned my business - if you are unlucky enough to live where all the LDS are chain stores that care about nothing but the bottom line for this quarter, then online is certainly the best way to go. It's hit or miss, I know. But do please give the LDS a chance before writing them off. Once in a while, you'll find a real treasure.

Dive s.l.u.t. - anytime, anywhere, any buddy. Always room for one more.

Locally - BL and TL, not so hot but hey sometimes you just gotta get wet.
Day trips - Clear Springs, Lake Travis, Aquarena, Comal, gulf rigs
Weekend trips - South Padre, Gulf Shores/Pensacola/Destin, Flower Gardens
Travel - Cozumel, Fl Keys, ???

Click on the CHUM link, browse our forums, check out our meetings. We have something going on pretty much always.

also remember - many duvers you mention SCUBA Board and they are clueless - they just don't do the internet as yet - we as internet denizens do and as such are familiar with buying online - myself, I buy local as I am a local business person
