unless, like some shops like mine, they have "free fills for life" if you buy you tank there.
:QUOTE]

Damn... that sounds like an outstanding deal:D Wish I could get something like that. I got a 10 or 20 airfill card when I bought my tanks.

I will likely buy my tanks from Shop A if their prices are competitive with Scubatoys (within $80 or so for two tanks will work for me). They do give free air for a year, but being as they're so far away from me, that is kind of a moot bonus.

You might find that with the added flexibility of getting your own tanks filled whenever you want, you might be able to get a lot of fills at shop A. I found the best part of owning my own tanks was not the cost savings but the time flexibility. In fact, I have two tanks that have been at the shop for over a week now because I had a friend drop them off for me the previous weekend and I didn't need them this past weekend as I spent it doing things with the wife and kids. I have a offshore rig dive booked for this Saturday so I'll mosey by the shop in the next few days and pick them up.

Yeah, I'd thought of that, it's just that the shop is an hour the wrong way from the rest of my life.

I need to move or something. :D

Personally I don't understand any business that hasn't learned that treating customers well is a good business model.

If every LDS was like mine the on-line retailers would have a tougher time of it. Mine is open 7 days a week, one of the options when renting any gear is by the day or a weekend rate (pick up after 4 Friday, return by noon Monday) and tank refills are included.

When you buy tanks from them you get the equivalent value in refill cards (I got 100 free fills with each of my HP steel tanks) and they charge the same for air or 32% pre-mixed nitrox. Their pricing for gear in general is very competitive my drysuit was almost the same as LeisurePro was charging but also included the course. They also have an in-house loyalty program that gets you free fills, discounts on courses etc etc.

On top of that you are actually made to feel welcome when you drop in and ask questions (the owner hands out his cell number!) .

Wow, that sounds like an amazing shop. One can only be so lucky! :)

The shop that is far from me is staffed by very nice and courteous people, I do like them. While their prices sometimes are not very competitive, I buy as much as I can from them just because they have treated me well.

I am sorry to hear that shop B charges for the extra day. I have never been to a shop that charges for a day that they are not open. It is not fair to the consumer to be charged extra if your return falls on a day that they are closed. Did the shop give a reason for charging on the day that they are closed? I would be curious to find out.

We rented tanks a couple of years ago while on vacation (not a place that one would consider a dive destination) that charged us for three days rental when they were actually closed for two of the three days. We wanted to dive on a Saturday but they were closed on Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Well, I politely spoke to someone at the convenient shop that charges for closed days...

Their argument was that everyone else in the city does it.

I responded with the name of the other shop that is far from me, saying that they do not as they feel it is unfair to customers, so in that light would they ever reconsider or maybe come up with a 'weekend rate'? :blinking:

I was told to "shop there then" (meaning the other store). :shocked2:

Needless to say I bought 2 tanks today (not from them), but will make sure I go to them when I need airfills. :D

I really don't know what their goal is, but it apparently is not customer service. :doh2:

Great move on your part. You'll find you'll take advantage of more diving opportunities now that you have your own tanks. Just remember to keep them filled. :)

Good move buying tanks. That will make life so much better an easier when diving, I wish I could buy some tanks, but I have to graduate and stop moving all over North America first.
