There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that diver education will improve significantly when it is separated from gear sales.

On a completely separate note ... I tend to agree with you, but I think poor diver education is related more to the fact that you can become an instructor without truly understanding what you're attempting to teach or without even having really mastered the basic skills you're trying to teach. I've seen many people go from OW student to instructor in a few months, with barely adequate skills to keep from drowning themselves, and with an inadequate understanding of what the stuff they read in the book truly means (because they've never actually experienced it).

Poor diving instruction is less related to gear sales than to con-ed sales ... part of every instructor's education is how to emphasize the importance of that next class. And too many instructors never really get out there and put in the bottom time to develop a comprehension of what they think they've learned in class. As a result it's way too easy for them to take something "from the book" out of context and completely change what it was meant to say.
