Hi there,
I am desperately tryin got decide where to go for my summer trip. Looking at Bonaire, but from florida with AA involves an all day layover in San Juan Puerto Rico. Has anyone done this trip and can you head into town or to the beach for the day?
Is there anywhere near to the airport that a taxi could go to for snorkelling?
Any advice would be appreciated.

We were held over in San Juan last January when we missed the Bonaire flight after our flight from Miami left several hours late. This year we're coming straight from DFW to San Juan and hopefully won't have the same problem. Fortunately AA picked up the bill for our hotel (Best Western-Pierre), cab rides and coughed up $120 in food vouchers to the hotel restaurant and a prepaid calling card. For that reason, we mostly ate and drank at the hotel until the 6PM flight out the next day.

The Best Western was probably three or four miles from the airport and a ten minute walk from the beach. It wasn't a super nice hotel, but it worked for the one day layover. We walked to the beach (about 10 minutes) and walked around the area neart the hotel. San Juan is a big city of about 2 million and so there are alot of areas to see. We heard that the Old San Juan section downtown is the party headquarters and where the casinos are located. Plus, as the Bonaire flight does fly out until the evening, you can stay out all night partying and still make the flight.

Have fun.

But Old San Juan is very beautiful and well worth a visit. Day or night.

you can get a taxi from you hotel to La Princesa and walk around from there.

At the top of the old town is a lovely square with good cafe's and the fort on the point is very interesting.

There is more info here.

Or do a Google search.

Thanks for the Info, and the good link. It still kills me to have to miss a day of diving, but I really want the cheaper flight to Bonaire. The airjamaica flight has better timing, but not sucha good price :(

thanks again

Have you looked into using Dutch Caribean Air (DCA). They fly out of Maimi at 2pm on Sat. They are the refurbished ALM but so far they have has a fair track record as best as I can tell. It's a direct flight and so far we have had good luck with them.
