Just booked a trip to Yap/Palau for 2014. We are staying for a night in Honolulu to ease the travel time. It looks like there is a total of 2 hotels around the Honolulu airport that provide free shuttle service to and from the airport. Can that be right?

Also, we land in Honolulu at 7pm and don't leave for Guam til 3pm or so the next day. Anyone know if we need pick up our checked bags? or can we check them all the way through? Wasn't sure if that was a bad idea being that it is a 20 hour layover...

Thanks!

Pick up your baggage. Twenty hours is a long time for airport personnel to "inspect" baggage if you get my drift. We used a limo service last time we were there for a layover, wasn't too expensive and they met us at baggage claim, packed our bags in the van and picked us up the next day for our flight.

The hotels right around the airport suck.

Check your bags all the way through to Yap/Palau from your original embarkation Airport, unless there is some some reason you must get to your luggage in Honolulu (i.g. medications) --in that case, then check bags to Honolulu, and then re-check them in the next day for your Yap/Palau flight itinerary via Guam.

The three hotels in the vicinity of HNL Int'l Airport that I've used are:

Airport Honolulu Hotel;
Best Western Plaza Hotel;
and Castle Pacific Marina Inn Airport Hotel.

All have on-call shuttle service, and are within fair walking distance to various fastfood eateries in the area.

If you have time, recommend taking The Bus Route 20 on Nimitz Hwy in front of the Airport & Best Western Hotels and do a quick tour of the nearby Arizona Memorial:

And if you ever need it (I unfortunately did!): The Hyperbaric Chamber at Kuakini Medical Center.

I lived on Guam 40 years. Flew to Yap and Palau a few times. You might want to send your gear through to Guam before heading on to Yap and Palau. You'd be there to see the loading of your gear and could add something while on Guam. I think your gear will be fine on Guam while you rest in Hawaii. I would either send them to Guam or keep it with you. That's just me. Either way. Have a great time, you'll love both places. If you can look around Yap see if you can visit MAP villiage in the north. It's worth it.
