Laptop - Coco View & AKR

So, thinking about bringing our laptop on this trip to Coco View & Anthony's Key. We want to dump our photos on it, and then upload them to our server, just to be on the safe side.

Has anyone had any problems with their laptops at these resorts? Any idea what the wireless connection is like at Coco View and Anthony's Key? I know Coco View has a wireless connection, but I'm not sure about AKR.

Also wondering if I need to bring some kind of surge protector when charging it.
If anyone has any advice on this,..that would be great!

I can't speak for AKR, but at CoCoView crime is non-existant. There is wireless service in the clubhouse for free. Many people will plug their laptops in at an outlet in the clubhouse and let it charge while they browse through the days "work." A surge protector is always a good idea.

Ah, ok..so does that mean the wireless connection won't work in the rooms? I'm going to look for a travel size surge protector...I'm sure someone sells small ones.

More an issue of occasional one minute blackouts. The line current provided at CCV has to pass through filters at the point where mainland island power meets the CCV generator grid. It works this way because of the resort-wide generation system that was installed and extensively technically upgraded since 1985.

The blackout issues are annoying for me when using "intelligent" rechargers for exotic dive lights. They seem to cycle through and start over whenever they are "turned off".

The internet access in rooms? best check over on CoCo Chat I know for sure it works in the main Clubhouse (dining room, bar, center of activity) and reaches out to many of the rooms. What people do not understand about CCV is that it is very compact in terms of distance from one end to the other. You can walk anywhere in two minutes. I have spent two weeks there and never gone outside of a 100 foot circle (on foot). Still- internet links have limited range and maintaining multiple antenna stations is a luxury not easily afforded in the tropics. What is tough at CCV has to be all but impossible at AKR, but I'll let those most familiar weigh in on that one.

At CCV, most people enjoy taking a quiet table in the main Clubhouse, breezy and airy, and typing away with the image of the huge screened view of the reef as their background. It is really a captivating place that affords privacy and quiet even at what one might see as the busiest times and places.

Here's how bad the crime is at Cocoview:

When we got there on Friday, we put the key in the doorknob of our cabana. When we left the next Friday, we took it out. Seriously. Laptops, cameras, dive computers, lights were all left out on the tables.

My dive log book with all my money, passport, C-Cards and traveler's checks was left right on the night stand. Nobody ever touched it and I didn't think twice about it.

If you can't relax and have a good time at Cocoview, it's time to start looking at some good drugs...

I think the only crime "theft" at COCO View would be from other divers - not from the locals or staff. The guns the night guards carry are not for BB's.

You should not plan on the wireless working in your room. The reach just isn't that far.

Since no one has chimed in on AKR- they have a charge for wireless access. We stayed on the key facing the main island and front desk and the signal was OK, no so much for the folks on the opposite side. On the main side it is a great signal in the lobby and the restaurant & bar.

I was hoping someone would share some information about AKR. But you left out a couple of important details.
- What does AKR charge for wireless access?
- How is the performance of the connection (speed)?
