What happens when one decides not to pay DM insurance at some point? Do you need to take DM refresher course afterwards to become current again?

Probably varies with agency, but your profile mentions PADI, so ... Pro Chek has two entries: authorized / not authorized to teach, and renewed / not renewed. Dropping just insurance moves you from authorized to teach to not authorized. As long as you renew your membership annually you'll likely stay "renewed". If you drop membership as well, later retraining will vary with how long you were away from the fold.

What knotical said is a good explanation for PADI Pros.

Basically, if you retain your membership, you'll only have to renew your insurance to be "in teaching status". If you go this route you get all the updates & don't need to be retrained. However, if you drop your membership, you'll have to be retrained/recertified.

How much is Padi membership?
Depends on the level. For the DM membership fees (not including insurance), last July I paid $99 initial membership and then in December renewed through 2014 for $118.

If you live in an area where insurance is required, PADI will have a record of your insurance expiry date. When it expires, PADI will put you into Non-Active status until you show them a new insurance policy...
