A few of us went out to Lanes Cove yesterday. It was a beautiful sunny and warm morning with calm seas and great conditions – 54° and 20’ vis. That’s the good part.

We came out of the water after the first dive to find three Gloucester police cars in the lot ticketing the eight cars that were parked along the wall and along the opposite side along the grassy area. I asked if this was a new policy since we have been parking here for years and have never been bothered. The head cop said parking has never been legal in that lot. He also said that from now on he’d be towing cars rather than ticketing them. He seemed to have a bit of an attitude.

Naturally, after the boys finished ticketing the cars, they headed up to the rocks to rummage through the coolers looking for illegal lobsters. Of the 13 divers at the site, I was the only one doing any hunting and I had just gotten out of the water with eight bugs still in the bag. I hadn’t even had a chance to double check them when I went up to see what all the commotion was about. The head cop went through my catch quite thoroughly but all was in order. The funny part is, he never asked to see my permit?

I did ask the fellow were would he consider it permissible to park. He said there is an area on the road in. There is a circle with some flowers in it. It’s over by were the kayaks are. I looked at it briefly on the way out and I’m not sure we’d be safe there either.

I have to say, these guys were out for the sole purpose of harassing divers yesterday. They showed up in force looking for trouble. I know that’s nothing new around Cape Ann but it still ticks me off every time I see it happen. It’s shameful the way they treat people there. End of rant - Back to diving.

I have to agree with you. Maybe recently some divers may have caused a problem there or the lobstermen fabricated a story to make the divers look bad. Were there any non-diving cars in the lot that got ticketed?

I was under the impression that it needed to be posted "no parking" in order to get a ticket??? How is one supposed to know?

I agree Al, that type of behavior is at the least, shameful. Trying to deal with that mentality is quite tiring. I wish that the business community supported in part (or whole) by divers, could impart some sense of reason to the departments which could affect that behavior. Till then be careful up there and don't be afraid of exploring new sites to dive.

I'm sure you guys were the only illegally parked cars in Gloucester yesterday...shame on you.;)

take measurements of sign. go home. create sign on sticky paper, "PARKING FOR DIVERS ONLY: all others will be ticketed and towed."
Go to dive spot, stick on sign, go diving.

Well I finally got my new computer up and running. Anyways I was just going to ask John if he wanted to go for a dive next week at Lanes Cove. I haven't been there in about two years and it is one of the better sites. But geting harrassed by the local cops doesn't sound like a good time either.

I do remember parking where the cop suggested to John or who ever talked to the head cop. I personally would not want to be called the head cop if you know what I mean. We would drop our gear off near the rocks and then park the cars sort of near that cove. We didn't have any trouble back then, but that was two years ago

Until we start writing our state senators and reps this type of harrassment will continue.

This is the reason that most people hate cops, because of their BS attitude.

You should take this to the police chief, the mayor, or the city council. Of course this might just mean they put up no parking signs.

There really isn't much different between the cops up here on the N.shore then the cops in the Dukes of Hazard.
