Lanai, Hawaii - Any Tips?

A non-divng friend has offered my wife and I a free place to stay on the island of Lanai in February. We are planning to stay for a week or so. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding operators or locations? I understand a lot of diving is done off of Lanai, but it seems most charters operate out of Maui.

Any informaiton on charters, operators, sites, or shores dives...or anything else you know about Lanai would be appreciated...

Must do dive is the Cathedrals. Sharkfin Rock's pretty good also, lots of schooling tropical fish.

You can also shoredive at Manele Bay and get air(I think) at the Manele Bay Hotel.

Great, thanks for the information. I've heard that the Cathedrals is really great. I'm also considering Molokini crater if I can swing it. Not too sure about logistics and all, just yet. Thanks for the links and information...I'll read it with pleasure....

It's been many years since I've been to Lanai but some good friends who go there frequently (mainly to golf at Lodge at Koele) and some who still have family there say it hasn't changed much: You'll either love it or hate it. Basically, visiting Lanai is like being a guest at somebody's house -- and the house is the only one on a island in the middle of the ocean. It's almost the ultimate get-away-from-it-all; Molokai is just about equal. Most visitors get "rock-fever" by the second day -- the shock of decelerating so suddenly and by so much from a typical urban/suburban lifestyle is just too much. My point is that Lanai has a lot to offer for the outdoorsy-type (hunters, freedivers, fishermen, archaeologists, Hawaiiana students, etc.) but you have to slowdown and go find it. Ask the locals (you have to).

Oh, they did open a new police station last month. The old one basically used to be somebody's house....
