ok im rather new to diving and the place i usually dive at has been hit by some big swells(shaws cove) so was wondering if there are any lakes near socal that is dive worthy.

Well there's Lake Perris, but is it diveworthy? Not really.
If you're up for a drive, you can head over to Lake Mead, just outside of Vegas..

Or just come down to La Jolla- the shores is a relatively easy dive (most of the time).

Lake perris is a waste of time unless you just want to get wet,I dove it 3 years ago and I didnt even see a fish, vis was around 20' in mid january

The major summer stroms which produce swells generally originate in the south off Baja and slam into the south facing Orange county beaches.

During the winter months most of the swells originate in the north up around Alaska, since OC beaches face south the beaches are protected from the strom generated swells.

Best OC diving is late fall, especially when the Santana are blowing, the winter and early spring.

Go back to your "Instructor" and inquire why he didn't cover this in a basic class?

FYI--very little lake diving in or around OC.

Good luck
