I think the guy running the dive shop was named Mike...very tall person? The divemasters on my dives were Amy and Chris, both great.

:rofl3:VEry tall describes the one we knew... being a Kiwi... they talk funny... could have sounded like Mike:rofl3: Excellent fellow don't know Amy and Chris we had Kim and Adam They were an excellent lot.... so what dive sites did you do? We did some where we started at SEverance and ended at Lighthouse covered most of the dive sites on one dive.... great expereince... really want to go back... did you see a lot of turtule hatchlings in the water when you were diving?

Because the wind was strong on the east side, we dove almost all the sites on the west side, some of them as drifts: Three Pyramids, Anchor Bommie, the Severance Wreck, Spider's Ledge, Maori Wrasse Bommie, and Lighthouse Bommie. I only saw the turtle hatchlings on the beach at night. In the ocean, we saw green turtles in a big range of sizes, and I think one loggerhead. All really good dives, and 1000% better than Ontario at this time of year!

A few months ago, I emailed Almitywife, asking about (sort of) affordable ways to take a Canadian family diving and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. She suggested Lady Elliot Island and linked us to her photos and their website.

We just got back yesterday, and it was our best vacation ever. We saw the whole range of marine life we were hoping for: Lots of green turtles, bull rays, a couple of mantas, maori wrasse, giant grouper, black tip reef sharks, white tip reef sharks, and lots of smaller fish and invertebrates The dive staff were really friendly and well-organized. The wind was fairly strong (15-25 knots from the E last week), but diving on the W side was fine. Our 8 year old had a fantastic time snorkelling in the lagoon, and our 12 year old loved the reef on the W side of the island. Seeing the turtle hatchlings run to the sea was also a highlight.

Thanks again for this great recommendation!
