Quite late to the thread, but I thought you all might appreciate the airport at LEI... It's that notch across the island.

Thanks for that..... we had a great time. Almitywife posted a thread reporting on our trip.

When where you there? Did you have a great time like we did?

I had a wonderful time and not just LEI , but OZ in general (my second visit). My trip was in 2002. LEI was the first diving I did after getting certified. This of course caused me to be disappointed with some of my following venues. Things like where are the mantas and how come there was only one turtle, all week, kept coming to mind.

Whilst you are invading your rock in March, I'll be shore diving on the island of Bonaire.

You'll have to let us know all about it... I think you may be there at the same time as Tiggrr

A few months ago, I emailed Almitywife, asking about (sort of) affordable ways to take a Canadian family diving and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. She suggested Lady Elliot Island and linked us to her photos and their website.

We just got back yesterday, and it was our best vacation ever. We saw the whole range of marine life we were hoping for: Lots of green turtles, bull rays, a couple of mantas, maori wrasse, giant grouper, black tip reef sharks, white tip reef sharks, and lots of smaller fish and invertebrates The dive staff were really friendly and well-organized. The wind was fairly strong (15-25 knots from the E last week), but diving on the W side was fine. Our 8 year old had a fantastic time snorkelling in the lagoon, and our 12 year old loved the reef on the W side of the island. Seeing the turtle hatchlings run to the sea was also a highlight.

Thanks again for this great recommendation!

I am just slightly jealous.... we were hoping to get back there for the turtle hatching but decided we will have to do it another time. As a Displaced Canuck to a fellow Canuck I am very glad you enjoyed your trip. It is a great place to dive... so was Mark (the Kiwi) still there running the dive shop?

I think the guy running the dive shop was named Mike...very tall person? The divemasters on my dives were Amy and Chris, both great.
