Hi,

My questions are somewhat similar to lionsandtigers' thread, but we're just visiting vs. living there and I didn't want to hijack that thread. My wife and I will be OW certified in Philadelphia next week (so complete n00bies) and will be in LA from July 6 (PM arrival) to July 13 (AM departure).

We're planning on diving Casino Point for a full day, but would like to get in a day of shore diving as well. We could dive either July 7 or 8, then are otherwise occupied July 9-10, and then are hoping to do another day of diving July 11. Due to the whole air travel thing July 12th is out, although I suppose we could do a shallow early AM dive that Saturday and stay within 18 hours of the liftoff.

From the earlier thread and some other reading it seems as though Laguna Beach has the best shore dives for beginners around the area. It also seems as though shore dives, however "easy," are best done with someone experienced the first time out.

That leads to two questions: Where specifically should we plan on heading--Laguna Beach and if so which dive site is best for beginners (Crystal Cove seems highly recommended)? And are there any groups going out on those days that would be tolerant of having 2 newbies along and might be willing to share some advice with (South Coast Divers looks like they organize a Saturday morning dive which might work subject to getting out of the water in time to be safe for the flight and a Tuesday evening dive that week--or is that a night dive, in which case we're obviously not night trained or equipped)? We can move the Catalina day around to accommodate the shore diving if need be.

In general, we're not so interested in pushing depth or seeing wrecks and are more interested in refining skills and seeing marine life.

Thanks very much,
Ari

Shaws cove in Laguna is a nice easy dive with a lot of marine life.

I have a personal preference for Crescent (next to Shaws) mainly due to the benefit of bathrooms and showers. You can dive from one cove to the other and enjoy the benefits of both. Crevasses, arches, grottos. A little dodgy if the swell is strong and best enjoyed when viz is more than 10 feet. My buddy and I will be there for a Reef Check survey on the 12th, and we're thinking of going there for a fun dive on the 5th. Just bracketing your stay here =)

While Crystal Cove is amazingly gorgeous, there are literally 100 plus stairs, with different height risers to climb down and most evilly, back up. If you guys are in great shape, no problemo. Otherwise, Divers Cove is nice, Heisler, too. They have the fewest stairs. Heisler has a shower at the base of the walkway and bathrooms, too. Diver's almost always offers bat ray viewing.

I live in Central CA, but will be down in OC the 7th and 8th. I would love to join you in diving on the 7th or early on the 8th. I fly out on the 9th to FL for Invasion.

My wife and I are going to Corona Del Mar late this afternoon.
We know it's not the best shore dive but is it’s a great site for testing new gear. Easy in and out, no stairs and easy parking! She is trying out a new mask and I am testing my new neck seal installation. (My first attempt at installing a neck seal.)

i like shaws, its easy and shallow and there is a lot to see including a underwater statue

I prefer Diver's Cove. It has shorter walk than Shaw's. My favorite is Heisler Park, but it's currently under renovation so you have to walk from Diver's Cove.

I'll add my vote for Shaws/Crescent. Lots of crevices and narrows (when the surge is light); great sea life; easy access (except for parking issues). Laguna Sea Sports is right there for fills, etc.

What is the story about that statue anyway? I understand she occasionally suffers "relocation."
