Planning a trip to Sea of Cortez in October and was wanting opinions on which is the better area for diving? Thanks for any advice.

Both are exceptional. La Paz has more onshore fun, Cabo Pulmo is a little more out of the ordinary. Both have seriously fun diving. Dive with Henri and Piru in Pulmo, Club Cantamar is great in LP but can be kind of cattle boaty but shouldn't be too much of an issue at the end of the season ( October) have fun!
I would hit Cabo Pulmo for a couple of days and then go up to La Paz.
