Myself and a few other Nor Cal guys are heading down to San Diego to dive the Yukon and the P-38 on Saturday. Before driving back up to the Bay Area on Sunday, we'd like to do a little shore diving, possibly at La Jolla Shores.

Can any of you So. Cal divers help out with a little info, how to get there, where to park, best spot to dive (deep is ok). Leaving tomorrow afternoon, so my time for a response is limited. Thanks in advance.

Hi Mel,

You will definitely want to take a look at http://www.divebums.com/main.html. That great San Diego shore diving site will tell you EXACTLY the information you need. As a general rule of thumb, most people drop gear and a buddy at the south end of Kellogg Park, and then park. The sooner you get there, the better because parking can be tough. If you can't park in the lot at the park, then you can look for parking along the street. Watch for surfers getting ready to leave because there's a wave of surfers that leaves for work between 7 and 7:30.

Also, you might want to call 619-221-8824 for dive conditions. They update the recording around 7 am every morning. I usually fin/snorkel straight out from Vallecitos Street to the white bouy. The bouy marks about 30' and the entrance to Scripps Submarine Canyon. Local dive shops have the Franko's map of the Shores. It might be worth picking one up.

One more thing - shore diving has been lousy this year, but for the most part, people are having luck descending on that bouy were viz is opening up. Don't give up before you get to that point, even in a red tide condition!!!!!

You can also check out dive reports on the divebums site. Good luck! I would love to join you as a guide (even though I still consider myself a beginning diver), but I'm going to be diving at the Coronados this weekend!

Hi Mel,
La Jolla Shores can be a good dive, and is best at night. It can often be a deep dive, and even a tech dive depending on where you go and how far down the wall you go.

LaJolla Cove is a shallow dive of 10-40 feet depending on were you go. You can drop down right as you enter the watrer and enjoy lots of marine life, eel grass, kelp, rock structure or sand. The cove has a sand strip up the middle from the stairs, and kelp, and eel grass around the sides. Or you can kick out a bit and dive there. In short, it is hard to go wrong at LaJolla Cove.

Red tide has been rough on us this year. I dove LaJolla cove last Thursday and we had only 10-20 feet of visibility depending on where we were. You could see the muddy brown water from shore forming a sort of slick about 200 - 300 yards off shore. but as I had made the drive from LA was went anyway and had a fun dive with good visibilty on either side of the slick.

I'll keep it to ~100 fsw since we'll be on 32% EANx, hopefully at that depth we'll be below the "red tide".

Looks like we can hit that depth without a problem if we head for the white buoy on the surface, then drop down and head due West.

How's the life on the wall?

Wow - 2 Mels, same thread. What are the odds? :06:

A couple of us La Jolla regulars are diving at about 7am on Sunday morning. We will be meeting in the main parking lot near the life guard tower. Most likely doing the north wall. You are welcome to join us. This dive does include an open water crossing at about 70ft from one wall to the other, no bottom in site but it is there at 120ft. Trust your compass, trust your compass! That's my mantra. Sound like fun? Email me direct, I am pm'ing you my cell number.

PM sent, thanks Terry. Sounds like the perfect plan, timing is great.

Hi Guys,
I was hoping to do some more work to these before making them public but I'm about to be out of free time for a few weeks. I recently made some maps of La Jolla and put them on my site. Hopefully they will provide some insight.

Man those maps are awesome Ross! Thanks for sharing them with us. I'm printing them as I type. Hey I see you like firearms. Gotta love the second amendment, eh?
