I have been to the shores almost every weekend it seems.
San Diego SCUBA Diving :: North County Scuba Center
is there practically every weekend as well. The owner Greg works public safety for Del Mar so he seems to know what conditions are like up and down the coast of San Diego County, at least from Childrens Pool to Moonlight.
Normally the shores is an ok dive with viz between 15 and 20 on an average day. That being said 3 days out of the last month I have been blessed with viz that was 40+ EASILY.
Usually there is just little ankle bitters to fight with, although I have seen 5-6 footers there once or twice.
The area can get pretty choppy with even a light wind coming from the north. Otherwise it is normally pretty flat.
Current is usually not too bad, mostly a slow southerly current. However it has been reversed and even ran into a pretty strong rip about a month ago or so.
That being said you would probably be best advised to completely avoid the shores on Saturdays and Sundays. Not only is parking horrible but there is also usually 500+ classes going on which means the students usually churn the viz up to about 3-5 feet (if you're lucky)
The other option would be to just go to the wall and drop over below about 60 ish feet and you should be good.
Another site that has some lineup and good dive areas is
Divebums - A San Diego Dive Website I wouldnt recommend them for much else but at least they give you good lineup and areas to explore....
