I'm going to be in La Jolla on Saturday the 17th for a wedding, and was hoping to get some diving in the AM. From what I've read, shore dives visiting La Jolla kelp forests sound interesting. Not looking for deep, just looking for fun.

Are there any local clubs or groups that wouldn't mind an experienced visitor from NJ? 300+ cold water dives in the Northeast. Thanks in advance....

If you don't get a response in this forum try some of the resources here: Divebums - A San Diego Dive Website

At LaJolla Cove parking on a summer Saturday will be horrible. So go real early. All the details: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/socal/459234-san-diego-dive-questions.html#post6805789

You can also get out into the Kelp via boat at Point Loma. They're the ones at the bottom of this list - all have trip schedules. If it doesn't say Kelp in the listing you won't see any. California Dive Boats : The Official Page

By early, Steve means before sunrise. There is plenty of parking spaces at La Jolla Shores if you're interested in diving the canyon. By dawn the parking on Vallecitos is full, and the main lot fills up shortly thereafter. For the kelp forests of La Jolla Cove it is pretty much the same. The parking lot is smaller, but there is more street parking available. They fill up quickly during the summer.

Check out Power Scuba, we dive La Jolla Cove every Sunday and there is usually a La Jolla shores dive most Saturdays. I usually get there around 0630 and there is plenty of parking at that time - but it fills up fast after that. I will definately be at the cove on Sunday and maybe at the shores on Saturday. PM me if you need more info.

Thanks for the response FM1520. I checked out the website and get the impression that "Power Scuba" is a local dive club? Are out-of-towners welcome, and will I be able to find someone to buddy up with? Or am I better off going through a dive shop for a sponsored swim?

Power Scuba is a "meet up social" group....and yes they are open to "out of towners" but you will have to pay the same dues we pay...which is zero. :D
They also have a sub-forum here too here: Power Scuba . Great bunch of divers. that just want to get wet...when I dive in the Diego waters, I always join in their fun.

Hi Dave,

I will be in SD visiting friends that weekend and would love to dive La Jolla Cove as well -- it would be my first time there. If you don't mind a newbie (advance cert, 20+ dives) tagging along or just want a dive buddy, let me know.

Cheers,
John

Thanks dwaters. I'll dig around in my couch cushions and see if I can find the money for dues :)

So, just fill out the form on-line, show up on Saturday morning and look for the divers with the power scuba hats?

Hi JohnJohn, sounds good. I don't know the terrain so we'll still have to hook up with someone who knows where they're going out there. Contact me off-list at dave - dot - felder - at - gmail.com

John - I just found the powerscuba meet-up Power Scuba (aka Scuba Diving in San Diego County) (La Jolla, CA) - Meetup

They have a dive on Saturday at 7:30AM at Solana Beach Shore Dive at Solana Beach! - Power Scuba (aka Scuba Diving in San Diego County) (La Jolla, CA) - Meetup which is right near the hotel I'm staying at, so I'm going to sign up for it. You're welcome to join, it sounds like there's a nice size parking lot there.

Now, I just have to find a local place to rent some gear.

Now, I just have to find a local place to rent some gear.
Two near LaJolla:

IB Divers LaJolla
924 La Jolla Blvd. La Jolla, CA 92037
t. (858)459-1003 f. (858) 459-1004
Working Hours: 10am - 6pm Mon - Sat; 7am - 7pm Sun

Or:

Sport Chalet. From LaJolla it's almost on the way to Solana Beach.

This one:
University Town Center
4525 La Jolla Village D19,San Diego,CA,92122
P: (858)453-5656
Sporting Goods | Sport Chalet
They don't open till 10AM either.

If you're staying farther north of LaJolla, there's another one in San Marcos also. It's the last location listed on their map page.

Grand Plaza
177 South Las Posas Dr.,San Marcos,CA,92078
P: (760)744-1804

If you see references to OEXpress in LaJolla here in the forum, they've recently stopped renting gear/providing fills.

it sounds like there's a nice size parking lot there.
More importantly a ramp. Some of the other dives in that area have steps. Lots of steps...

If you're staying in Solana Beach... and since that's where the dive is as well... the closest good place is San Diego Divers in Sorrento Valley. (Just down the highway South a few miles.) Google them and you should be set.

See you there!

Bill
