    Koozie - Wikipedia

The Koozie was invented back in the late 1950s on a scuba boat trip from LA to Catalina Island by divers. I know this is NOT safe diving today, but we were young and new to scuba diving then and what did we know at that time of the effects of alcohol on the body while diving.? After the first dive, some of us would break out some cans of ice cold beer in the hot California summer sun.

Some of the beer drinkers said the beer would get warm too fast (I never had that problem), while others said their hands would get very cold from holding the iced cans. One (name unknown) diver dug into his dive bag and came out with an old neoprene dive hood. He cut out an oblong length of the 1/4 inch neoprene rubber from the hood, wrapped it around the can, problem solved. Latter the end would be stitched together to make a sleeve, it had no bottom at that time. Back then most divers made their own items of diving equipment.

Latter commercial companies introduced this to the mass market. The first name I know of was "keg warmer" for the beer can.

Now you know where and how the Koozie was invented.

Since 1963.......The Hell Diver's spearfishing contest/rodeo has pushed every limit you can think of. Including alcohol while diving to 200ft. Many friends there.
