Kona whatsit?

On several dives last week in Kona, Hawaii, I saw these little things sticking out all over the reef. They're in the realm of a half an inch long (maybe 3/4" max). Any idea what they are? The owner of the boat I was diving with said he sees them all the time, but couldn't put his finger on what they're called -- he assumed it's some kind of tunicate.

I see them all the time too... I would also like to know what they are when you find out!

Might be the algae Neomeris annulata. It's partially calcified which accounts for the white portion.

If you pick it and rub it between your fingers, Neomeris paste makes a fun face-wash.

One of these days I'll remember to taste-sample this alga... it's probably bitter.
