Good reliable liveaboards for Komodo area during October/November :
From 06 to 16 October Komodo : Ambai, the new boat from Wallacea dive cruise ( 10 nights at 200 euro / night )
From 23/10 to 05/11 : The Seven Seas Komodo Maumere. ( 425 usd / night).
There is also the komodo alor dive fleet, they always have boats around komodo for reasonable price.

I can vouch for how Jerome operates his company, Dive Komodo and Rinca * MV AIMBAI * Dive Cruise Indonesia - KOMODO NATIONAL PARK - Bali - Sangeang - Gili Banta - Rinca - Diving Indonesia with Wallacea . We've been aboard his other boat in Bunaken/Lembeh/Sangihe, and will be aboard again in Raja Ampat next February. I can't wait until we can get aboard his new boat, which has far more amenities, and his same attention to operational details.

Can't comment on the Black Manta's Komodo trip but I spent 5 nights on this boat in January last year through the Similan Islands and really enjoyed it.

My sisters did a Komodo trip on the SY Siren and raved about it. They liked it so much I joined them on the same boat on their Philippine itenerary. They were not lying!! Fantastic boat and even better crew. I would go with them in a heartbeat. They are not the cheapest, but how much is a great experience worth?

I want to hijack a little... I too am looking for a Komodo boat, June-July timeframe. I am looking more towards the ~10 day trips since everyone says Komodo is soo great, and coming from the US it is far so I want to get in a lot of diving. So far I have not found too many boats doing that many days. Also since it is 10 days (maybe ~30 dives or so) should I still try to go in/out of Flores area or is it not as much of an issue to go Bali-Bali. I would think a one-way (bali->flores) would be nicest (and then maybe stay for some land diving in Flores area) but I have not found this trip on any boats (except maybe at the start/end of season which doesnt work.

We are looking into Mermaid I & Dancer. I would love to find a slightly more friendly budget though. $2500pp for 10 or 11 days would be really nice. Going to Flores by air does sound nice to have more dives in the park and less crossing time, but does add cost too (any ideas how much RT air would be?).

I welcome experienced opinions on the bali v/s flores departure issues as well as boats with 10 or 11 day trips I should check out.

QUICK UPDATE: I did a bunch of reading and schedule checking... schedule rules out a bunch of boats. I think my opening is ~24 May -> 24 June. For the longer trips maybe there is room on Mermaid I, Ambai, Felicia has a 11N. Most boats seem to be ~$300/nt. Would love a nice boat with a little better budget, but dont know of any. FYI I have (or am) looked into Ambai, Scuba Queen, Felicia, Mermaids, Dancer, Bidadari, Siren, Seven Seas, Ondina, Amira, Dami, and Pindito.

Just a bump since I want to book this week and seek opinions. Top choices now are
1)Mermaid I (10 days from Bali) - a 10% discount offer allows OK pricing... only concern is the crossing & number of dive days in KNP v/s along-the-way diving.
2) Mona Lisa - $274/day and we can do as many days as we want it seems (they just float around and you meet up with them). 10 days would cost more, but since its all in KNP maybe we would just dive 8 days.
3) Felicia - Has a 12D trip in our timeframe that gives us a couple more days in KNP for the same price as Mermaid, but not as fancy a boat. And local in Flores so no crossing.

So far I have not found other boats with openings. I know there are some smaller "local" boats that can be more budget. Main concern is for great crew on a nice comfortable boat. Anyone with opinions on these boats (or knowledge of others) please chime in. Thanks!

Komodo Cruises, the management company of the Mona Lisa, sometimes has problems keeping track of how many people are on which boat. I guess this is a function of the boats staying out all the time, and having supplies and divers shuttled back and forth on any given day. The flexibility is a very handy factor; it just needs some refining. Having said that, once you're aboard, things go reasonably smoothly, as long you're accepting of the fact you're not aboard a gold-plate liveaboard, with every amenity falling into place like clockwork. We had no serious complaints about the sister ship Mangguana, and the dive guide was absolutely first rate. YMMV.

I paid US$200 in August last year, round trip, per person Bali > Labuan Bajo > Bali. Based on comments from many friends who have done the crossing, I felt it was well worth the money. All dives at great sites, no massive seas, nights spent in quiet bays, loved it all. I'd have done the same thing if I had the option with any boat. Have fun!

Just finding this now - hope it is not too late for Jeremyl and the OP.

I have dove 5 10-day Komodo liveaboards in the past 4 years (NusaTara, Siren, Mermaid I, Komodo Dancer, Mermaid I) and Mermaid I was miles above all the others in every dimension (guiding underwater, dive site choice, food, crew, service, cabins). The crew is unreal. It's actually my favourite crew and boat of any liveaboard I have dove anywhere in the world. I wish they trained crew internationally. The only reports I have heard of boats with this level or service were for AAII (RIP) and a couple of the super luxury boats (at significantly higher cost). Isabelle is truly exceptional both as a DM and as a cruise director.

IMO starting in Bali would be a negative if you were on a slower and less stable phinisi (wooden sailboat), but not if you are on a steel hulled vessel (which both Mermaids are). This is not a "transition cruise" done once or twice a year - the sites Mermaid dives en route have been chosen after a lot of thought and the guides know them well. The Moyo Isl dives are beautiful and are not easily dove any other way (only resort nearby is super high end). The Sumbawa sites too I have never seen another boat dive (one is super for exotic octos). But most importantly, Mermaid's professionalism, Swiss watch organization and steel hull ensure they will dive the best sites in the Komodo region (not just promise them on their website, then not deliver - this has happenned more than once with boats starting in Labuan Bajo) and at the best times. In my experience, phinisis in this tier too frequently bail on top sites due to speed or stability/weather concerns. Mermaid skips many of what I consider the average Komodo sites (often dove twice each when you start in Labuan Bajo), in favour of the truly excellent sites, and they are more generous with dive times. All the other itins I have dove had more duds. Crunching my bottom time numbers, in the end there was a small difference in total bottom time (a little less time on Mermaid) due to a couple fewer dives but the difference in quality underwater was exponential higher on Mermaid.

Feel free to PM if you want more info on the other boats. Everyone's trip is different, but we had a horrible 13 day trip on the Siren (Worldwide Dive and Sail) with the owner on board.

For budget boats, I dove Grand Komodo's NusaTara with two of my best friends in 09 and we had an excellent time. Looking back, the trade offs were 3 dives rather than 4 (although a friend dove this boat about 6 months earlier with her family and reported they were offerred many more night (4th) dives), no Nitrox, simpler vessel, and only the DM generally had enough English for us to converse with (we did have a US Bahasa Indonesian speaker in our group, which had influenced my choice). But the guiding was good, site choice very good, safety excellent, treks were the best of any trip I have done (we trekked a lot as we had more time in the afternoon). With our creativity and their flexibility, we actually ended up having the entire boat to ourselves which was incredible. Make no mistake, the facilities are more modest, but you could likely dive two 10 days on the NusaTara for one on most of the next tier of boats. The company has been diving in Indonesia a very long time with a good record. Their website is Raja Ampat Liveaboard Diving, also Komodo, Alor, other Indonesia.

Hope that helps.
