I know the words SCUBA and "saving money" don't normally go on the same page but I have friends in San Antonio who want to get certified and they are on a large family cost budget with a single person income plan that would normally not allow the both of them to get certified. Is there perhaps a private instructor anyone knows of who might be less expensive than the price quoted by some of the San Antonio dive shops? I am not trying to challenge the business plan of the small shops but it's dog eat dog out there when it comes to paychecks. Thanks!

Private instruction will cost more than from a dive shop. You will find that the shops offer the least expensive entry courses; used as customer recruitment, and are price as low as can be. Reality: don't skimp on diving. And, the cost of training usually doesn't end with Open Water certification. You can expect significant costs in equipment and services if you dive regularly.

Please PM me if anyone has any insight. I tend not to be a good model for the SCUBA experience. I still have my $35 Jack Cousteau mask from 1985, $15 fins and $9 boots. I do buy a new mask strap now and then. Fins and boots are still like new, with a few scratches mind you. (They don't make stuff like the used to ;-)

If they are a military family, contact John Duggan, Duggan Diving in Universal City near Randolph. John is not only a fantastic instructor, but he has a special program for military and dependents which will save you some money. However, they must understand that diving is not an inexpensive hobby, and the training is just the start of a fairly continuous outflow of money for equipment and dive experiences.
