I use a bowline, but there could be something better.

Options here

Overhand knot - easy, hard to ratchet down tight

Leader loop - a hitch style knot that resists slippage, big fat chunky guy sitting under your line.

Square knot - designer for attaching two ends of lines of same size and material, can sometimes come undone

Rolling bowline - difficult to tie, never come undone, super tight.

Two half hitches - tightens in on itself, looks sloppy

overhand loop knot
Is that the same that I know as a fisherman's eye? That's what I use.

Since the line type (braided flagline) I have on my spools is a little prone to slippage, I generally prefer the fisherman's knot family of knots for that line. So I wouldn't use a bowline knot.

I'm lazy, I just use an overhand loop knot on each end. Haven't had any issues with line spinning in the spools.
