My dive buddy and I are looking to head to Kingston this summer. I am looking for any recomendations from those that have been there on cheap places to camp, good charter operators and can't miss dive sites that are 130' or shallower. Looks like a long drive from Detroit but if it is half as good as what I hear I know it will be worth it. Anybody know what gas is going for in Ontario?

Thanks E.B.

ahhhh Kingston. One of my favorite places to dive. I've never camped there so I can't help you there. & the charter operator we've always used sold his boat earlier this year. If you don't get any help on those fronts via this post, make sure to ask in the Ontario Fresh Water Freaks forum. They are sure to have some answers.

As for diving shallower than 130', there are lots of good choices in the Kingston area. Some of my favorites are The Marsh (better pre-zebras), The Munson, The Comet, The Cornwall, City of Sheboygan, Olive Branch, and the Annie Faulkner. The Frontenac, too. Cool that someone returned the compass.

I can't help you with diving in Kingston (planning on making the trip there myself soon), but gas will run you in the US $2.50/gallon range.

You can always call up Tom @ Northern Tech Divers and ask him for all that you need to know. They can suggest accommodations, dive sites and whatever your heart desires. Whenever I/we go up to Kingston, he is the charter of choice.

Gas right now is a anywhere from $0.79 to $0.89 per liter for regular in Ontario right now, depending on when and where you buy it.

Thanks everybody I'm really just trying to get a good feel for how much I'm gonna drop on this trip. Thinking of going mid july, should I have reservations on charters before hand or are there enough running around that I will be able to find a couple spots everyday?

It never hurts to make reservations (NTD would be my choice), especially if there are particular wrecks you'd like to dive. If you don't have any preferences you probably could get away with just 'walk-on' charters. I'd also avoid the July 1st weekend (Canada Day). The way our government is spending money, you might be able to do the whole trip on $100 and still have change left over.

I've already booked spots with NTD for mid-Sept. You really should call them or check out www.northerntechdiver.com. I've never dove with them but they were great to deal with for our trip this year and I can't wait to get up there. They have a great reputation, nice website and their prices are excellent. Check them out. They have a great info page on booking with them. I booked over the phone and it was very easy.
