My niece is only six years old and for christmas I am going to get her a snorkle set with fins. When I was a little kid I remember getting mask sets that were exactly the same as not wearing a mask. These leaked the whole time they were junk. Does anyone recommend what kind of mask sets are good for kids. I am not going to spend a lot of money since she will grow out of it quick, but I dont want to get her something like what I had as a kid.

to get inexpensive masks/fins/snorkel packages. Just go to your local LDS and see what they have. BTW, since small faces are hard to fit you may want to take your niece (or someone her size if you want to keep it a surprise) along to try it on.

BTW, don't forget that there are two ways to go with fins: full foot and open heel (requires booties).

Bonne chance,

If you're comfortable with it, I would give her a sort of gift certificate and take her shopping with you so she can try it on, that's really the only way you'll know if it fits (plus it should be fun for the both of you).

As far as fins go, full footers are generally cheaper, but quickly grown out of, open heels are more expensive but will fit her feet longer.

Scubapro sells a line of masks and snorkels sized for kids and the quality is good. The price is also reasonable at around $30 for mask and snorkle. The LDS can also assit in getting the fit right.

A few years ago I bought a mask/snorkel/fin set from Diver Supply. I found mt local dive shops of not too much help since thye don't normally carry gear that small.
My kids 10 and 12 are going to get certified next year and I will be buying them their own gear because trying to rent XXS gear is almost impossible.
Also when you neice turns 8 she can join SCUBA Rangers if there is a progrm local http://www.scubarangers.com/
My kids have loved it.

Good luck
