I am planning on being in the Keys this March. The other three people that will be with me don't dive so for me it will be catch as catch can. For the Keys at this time of year how much planning ahead and reservations are required to dive? I've seen plenty of links to different operators and thats not what I'm after- just an indication if I need to have a pretty rigid schedule set before I leave or if I can mange to find a spot on a boat on a day to day basis when I get there. I specifically didn't nail down a spot either. Our accomidations are at about MM90 but I don't have a problem going up or down the highway and trying some different spots.

Hey Y

I would just grab the phone book when you get here. All the addresses are MM's (mile markers) so it's easy to tell what island and where they are.
Shouldn't be any trouble around the time you'll be here.

Remember to specify the type of diving you're looking for too. ;)

Day to Day should be fine that time of year. Hope you have a good time down here :)

Shore diving question has come up in the past and the local divers say there isn't any. I assume this is due to the distances you would need to swim from shore to find depths or sites worth diving. There are some sites that people use snorkle gear on. As far as close to a dive shop- it seems like there are thousands of them (at least dive charter operators) so you shouldn't be far from one most anywhere in the keys. I don't recall an abundance of campgrounds but would be willing to bet they can get more expensive than you think. Look into renting a condo for a month. Only draw back is that you are rooted to one spot if you do. Best advice is to just bring lots of money.
