Myself and a buddy will be going down next week for 3 days of diving. We are both experienced divers.

Any recommendations on ops? Scuba Siving magazine highly recommends Amy Slate's, but I've read mixed reviews on them from other people. We would like to do the Spiegel Grove, but other than that we are pretty open on dive sites.

Also, can someone explain this Wreck medallion thing to me?

TIA

Recommendations Conch Republic Divers in Tavernier (www.conchrepublicdivers.com), Ocean Divers in Key Largo (www.oceandivers.com) or Quiescence in Key Largo (small 6 pack boats).

You need to purchase a medallion to dive some of the wrecks in the Keys...the shops will sort you out.

Cheers.

I have had good dives with Cristal River Dive Ops. I have drooped on the Spiegel Grove and some nice swim trows. Grate dove ops.

I second the recommendation for Conch Republic. We head down there each fall to dive with Brenda and Gary. Spiegel Grove is (truly) awesome, as in "OMG, is this even a boat? or a small city?". Personal favorite is the Duane: great wreck, interesting swim throughs, lots of small fish and some barracuda's just hanging out. On the way back, check out Snapper Ledge, it's well known for 1000s of snapper schooling over a shallow reef; if you're lucky some Jack will demonstrate the food chain and then everyone gets chased off by a nurse shark or 2. Mesmerizing good fun.

If you can get a night dive in too, I highly recommend it.

We use Rainbow Reef. They have two boats in Key Largo and two in Islamorada. Professional but fun people, great prices, and they even discount them if you don't want a DM.

There are over 20 dive ops in Key Largo....look at websites, make phone calls and find one that fits your personality and your pocketbook. Above all, come on down for some great diving!
