WINFIELD, W.Va. (WCHS) — A scuba diver drowned Wednesday in Putnam County, the sheriff’s office said.

A man was scuba diving in the Kanawha River in Winfield about 3 p.m. when something went wrong and led to his drowning, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the man had just finished some sort of scuba diving class and went back into the water with his girlfriend after others in the class had left when the incident happened.

The body of the man, who was not identified, has been recovered.

The link you have provided is now broken. It seems that they didn't quite get the story straight, as this link mentioned that it was a woman who "nearly" drowned in the Kanawha River and was taken to the hospital.

The link still works. Goes to the same article.

Ok, the link now goes to an updated story with corrections. The diver was indeed a woman named Archele Faye Griffith. She was injured on August 28, and then died on September 1. There are other versions on the net, but not speak to the accident.
