I think the splendid toadfish looks close enough to lionfish to kill.
Step away from the bottle. :silly:

They are not at all similar, and anyone who would kill one of those would be assaulted by other divers.

I am curious how the divers of 20 years in the future will look back at our mania for killing lionfish.

Will it be with approval, or, condemnation? An interesting thought.

All the best, James

An absolutely fascinating thought, James. It's been years since I've been so mentally stimulated.

Thank you.

If you ask landowners fighting Kudzu, they'd say start as soon as you can. It can be grazed, even over grazed, but it still takes over 150,000 acres a year.

When you come to Cozumel next, look me up: we'll do your AWARE Fish ID specialty course. :D

They should look back at this time and consider that at this time it was thought of as the prudent thing to do. Hind site will always be 20/20, and you have to make decisions today based on the information you have currently. As of today the information is that we don't have a solution to solve the problem and at this time we can only try to keep decimation of the native fish population by this artificial method of culling them. Essentially buying time at this point, with hope to the future that scientific study will eventually yield a solution.

Betty - I'm with the rest of the gang on this one! Tell the DH to bring both!! He will find once he gets used to the drift diving, it's really not that hard to stop and take pix on most of the reefs. Occasionally you may end up on a reef with a strong current, but there's always spots to duck into to stop and take pictures. I'm still learning, but I just got back from Coz and found I had taken over 900 pix. (And a few of them were actually decent!! LOL!)

This last one isn't very good, but if you look close, you'll see it's a Lionfish kill. The mutton snapper was going crazy trying to get in there, and as soon as it could, it grabbed the Lionfish and gulped it down. It wasn't quite dead yet and he took it practically off the spear. He followed us for another 30-40 minutes hoping for dessert! ;)
