Hola all,

I am happy to announce that I just got married and I now need to get my wife involved in diving :D ASAP. I am fortunate that she has already expressed interest in diving but I am very interested in hearing any experiences, comments or advise in introducing your partner into it.

please provide feedback...

Do what I did - give her lessons for her birthday or Christmas, make sure you join her in the class!

Pretty wetsuits as presents help a lot. Worked for me...:D

First, make sure she can snorkel. You would be amazing how much anxiety some spouses can have.

If she can't handle snorkeling mask... Forget the scubadiving, unless you want to have a good post for Accidents and Incidents....

A good swimmer does not necessary equals a good diver, and it all boils down to anxiety.

First ... make sure it's something she wants to do for herself, and not just because you want her to. It's not something anyone should do to please someone else.

Assuming that she wants to do it, then start out with some "practice" in the water ... swimming, snorkeling, that sort of thing ... the more comfortable she is in the water beforehand, the better.

Maybe try a "Discover Scuba" class ... give her the chance to put a regulator in her mouth and dip under the water to see how she likes it. If she comes up smiling ... then it's time to buy her the lessons.

I told my wife that if she wants to see me she has to take up diving. I also told her that I would like her to take up diving.

I got her snorkling this past year (2006) which she enjoyed and all being well she will take the OW this summer. My wife is pretty good about wanting to do things that I do.

Expensive, but effective in my case, was taking my wife on a cruise, and when we hit Grand Cayman doing a Discover Scuba on 7-mile beach. Seeing all the pretty fish got her hooked. Now she’s a DM.

A bit less expensive could be snorkeling somewhere with interesting critters. As with anything else, a new diver should have a reason to want to dive.

Does Oscar Kilgore dive?

Ask her if there is anything she wants to do, and then offer to do it with her.

Ask her where she wants to go for a dive trip...start planning a year or two out, anticipation is powerful.

Couples that play together, stay together. I made that up...that's my latest strategy.
