Hey guys. I just got back yesterday night from my first trip to Coz. It was AWESOME!! Even the lower then normal viz wasn't bad since I usually dive in cold water with crap vis here in BC, Canada! We stayed at the Barracuda and dove with Dive Paradise! These guys seemed to do a very good job! The dive masters were very friendly and funny. I'm not on for big descriptions of trips as its tought to remeber 9 days back but my favorite dive in the south was Palancar Bricks and the favorite second dive further north would have to be Villa Blanca! Favorite fish was definetally the spotted drum! Those are SO cool. As far as food, I loved the Pepe's restaruant close the the ferry terminal. Its alittle pricy but the food was great. For cheaper food, almost all restaurants were great! Carlos and Charlies was another fun one to visit. Anyways, it was an awesome trip and I can't wait to go back. Oh ya, and the Cenotes on the mainland (Hidden Worlds Dos Ojos) was fantastic to go diving in! That is a must try for anyone that doesn't mind diving in tight areas. If ya got any questions, shoot and I'll try to get ya an answer!

The viz really varried depending on day and where we were. Some days we had about 100 ft max but the last day we were there the current was so fast that the viz was about 40 ft. I guess it depends on the day? Either way, its tons of fun!

I've heard some people talk about seeing more big stuff after the hurricane than before. I read that one person saw three thresher sharks on one dive. Did you have any noteworthy big animal encounters? Also, how does Cozumel compare to everywhere else you've been diving?

We had just one shark that swam VERY close to us. Other then that, not much huge animals. We did see one eagle ray which was neat. I've only dove in the lakes around my house which isn't much fun and I've also done tons of dives in the Vancouver area (British Columbia West Coast) with my nice warm drysuit. I thought Coz was great and all but I'm still not ready to give up on the cold water diving at all. I love the kinds of stuff we see here at home.

Where the heck was that??!! I've never seen any but reefs, blackies, and nurses in 5 or so trips to Coz. I've *busted* on Aldora to take me to unusual sites looking for bigger animals (I know that they are there!)...

Thee are no sites that guarantee bigger animals. We have been seeing some larger and unusual sightings since the hhurricane, but not sure how long it will last before these creatures find their way back to the more peaceful areas for themselves.

For the most part, the only sharks you'll see on the reefs here are the nurse shark, an occasional black tip or two, and a very, very occasional hammerhead.

I guess you just have to get lucky.

Yeah, I read that, too, and I wondered if the poster may have mistaken nurse sharks for threshers. They both have the much longer upper tail lobe (longer than the lower lobe), though in the thresher's case it is more extreme. I wasn't there, but it's the first thresher sighting I have ever heard of around Cozumel. Nurse sharks are pretty common there.

mistaking a nurse for a threasher...........lol
