So I used 50/50 white vinegar/91% isopropyl alcohol and my first reaction was, “Eeewww, can I really put that stuff in my ear? Won’t it hurt?”

Hope I don’t disintegrate upon first use..

I have been using 1/3 isopropyl alcohol, 1/3 white vinegar, and 1/3 distilled water for 10 years since I blew out a week of diving with an outer ear infection. 4 minutes in each ear after every dive. The water apparently mitigates the harshness. NO infections in 10 years.

If you are looking for something prescription, Bausch + Lomb has a preventative product that is similar but contains a couple more ingredients. It and can be used in the long term. It should not be used to cure an active infection.

The product's NDC number is: 24208-615-77 for those interested.

After maybe 7 infections I've become religious about my post dive 50%/50% and a few drops coconut oil for moisture.

There's some warnings online about it disrupts your ear flora... But I'm semi regularly diving in sh!tty conditions so it is necessary.

No infections when I use it post dive. Within an hour of surfacing generally.

Do you use the coconut oil after the ear beer?

I keep some in the mix to make my life easy. Giving it a good shake before use. A really tiny bit goes a long way. It's a little folk medicine feeling to recommend while I'm typing it out, but that's what I've been doing and my ears are happy.

I've had somewhat burning ears from straight 50/50% over months so I modified the recipe from online reading a couple years back. No issues since.

I haven’t had issues with my ear but now you have me wondering....

Or the other thought is don’t fix what isn’t broken. I can’t decide!

As far as I can determine, many home remedies for preventing outer ear infections using ear drops are anecdotal. That said, the US Navy has used AceticAcid 2% Aluminum Acetate Otic Solution, samesame as @NatureLVR. The goal is to kill bacteria in our ear before it can start growing. Posting on my way to Sorong via Makassar.
