Please permit me to rant for a moment because I need a release. I promise I will keep it short. Today a friend asked me to work for him as a deckhand/ divemaster on a dive charter because he was ill. I said sure and reported for work this morning at 0800 for a 0900 departure. As we departed we asked the trip leader what she requested or needed for her open water students. We settled on a place that doesn’t get dove that much in 58to 62 feet of water. I have been here many times over the past few years and watched the site blossom in the summer and then get battered in the winter storms. When we pulled up to the site we noticed that there was a boat on the site with out of state numbers with 2 guys coming up out of the water looking like they were dressed for war. They had cave reels and jump reels and spear guns and numerous lights just to dive a barge of bridge rubble. I asked them if we could dive with them and they hollered back that they were leaving and to go ahead. The Captain circled up on the site and I jumped the chain. As I was descending thru the halocline I saw a bunch of small grouper,snapper and spade fish dead with holes in them. When I reached the bridge deck to tie in I noticed a 4 foot bull shark still partially alive with 2 spears in him and a hole in his side that looked like a bang stick. I tied in and went to the shark. It was dead by then so I carried it of the site about 20 to 30 yards so hopefully none of his brothers would come around. The group of divers made the dive without a problem and we went on our way to the next sits and so on. After we reached the dock I offloaded the passengers who by the way had no knowledge of problems on the site and sent them happily on there way. While I was at my second job, cleaning fish for a charter boat at a different marina I saw the out of town boat I had seen earlier coming up to the boat ramp to trailer up. Maybe it was not right but I went up to them and after an exchange of pleasantries I asked them about what they had done on the site I had seen them on. They said that they were PRACTICING for a upcoming spearfishing tourney. I asked them about the shark and they said “IT JUST GOT IN THE WAY”. I got a little ill with them and tried to explain to them all the things I thought they had done wrong. They just laffed and called me a tree hugger. My problem is all these people come down here and desemate the population like this and don’t see a problem with it. But yet when they come fishing they complain when they don’t catch fish.Or don’t see any big fish on a dive. I could rant further but I will not. I don’t know I may be a reef hugger and am a little over exaggerating over this. Thanks for listening K

Didn't see, much "ranting" as you say. I totally agree with you. I will eat anything (just about) and my beef med. rare, but I see absolutely no sense in "wasting" fish, fowl, or other fauna just for "practice".

Those kind of people need to be slapped by more than Denise's skillet! Idiots.

True. The hit would be painful but not a deadly blow like the cooking would be.
