Marine police say drunken
man soaked patrol officer
Marine Police officer Larry Adams said he was finishing paperwork when an
intoxicated Huntsville man decided to play chicken with his patrol boat on
the Tennessee River on Saturday.
Adams said he was on patrol at the Hudson Memorial Bridge when
Thacker Johnson Smith, 53, of 3508 Lois Lane, flew past him on his
personal watercraft.
“He was like a kamikaze coming at me full speed,” Adams said.
Smith allegedly soaked Adams and his boat when he whipped his watercraft
past the officer at 2:45 p.m.
“I got drenched from head to toe, and he was so close, I could see the whites
of his eyes,” Adams said.
“When he got done splashing me, he took off down the river to the railroad bridge.”
He said Smith made a U-turn near the bridge and sped back toward his boat.
“I think he was going to try to soak me again, but he was going too fast to
turn,” Adams said.
“He rammed his Jet Ski right into the rear of my boat.”
Witnesses told Adams that Smith did somersaults through the air before
landing in the water close to his boat.
“He looked up at me from the water with a big grin on his face, and I knew
he had to be intoxicated,” Adams said.
“Smith was nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit.”
Adams said his patrol boat sustained minor damage and is still operable.
Adams arrested Smith for boating under the influence, third-degree criminal
mischief, reckless operation of a personal watercraft, failure to follow rules
of the road, reckless endangerment, operator’s license not in possession and
attempting to elude a marine police officer.
Smith remained in the Morgan County Jail in lieu of $2,800 bail.

Launch torpedo @ safety stop targeting idiot jet skiers!
I have had an incident with a jet skier who thought our diver down flags were a shalom course! When I got to shore, he came very close to eating my backplate!

I really hate having to deal with Jet Skiers... (or waverunners).
They are typically operated by people who have no clue the 'rules of the waterways' and are extremely dangerous as they don't know how to drive them.
I've had to of them hit my boat beause they lost control and/or were going to fast and let off the gas (to slow down) and tried to turn without using any gas/throttle.
I've also towed one in at sunset when he ran out of gas way up river. I would have left him there if it wasn't two 10 or 12 year old kids and the sun was going down and when I pulled up to them they were shivering from being wet.
The other problem with them as noted above, it that a lot of kids drive them. You take a 10 or 12 year old and put them on a 100hp jet ski that will do 70mph? what were there parents thinking?
at places they have lake houses its even worse as the grandparents own the lakehouse and buy a couple jet skis for the grandkids. Then the entire family and 10 grand kids come down and as soon as one set gets off them another set of kids gets on them. some of our lakes with large amounts of lake houses have been just covered up with jetski's.
At least now you have to have a Vessel endorsement on your drivers licence to drive a boat or jet ski. but still lots of folks out there without them and hard for limited marine police to enforce it.

i just have one question, how are they charging him when attempting to elude when the officer never started pursuit and then the guy simply turned around parked his jet ski on the boat and when he stepped into the boat there was no room so he just simply fell in the water
