I think Calvin would definately protest of your use of the word 'cat' when referring to Hobbes.

Hobbes is definately a Tiger according to Calvin.

That's part of the story of the cartoon. Calvin see's Hobbes as a live tiger and his friend and "larger than life", while everyone else (parents, etc.) see it as a 'stuffed animal'. It's all based on Calvin's imagination that Hobbes is a real tiger.

that's one of the great things about this comic strip is that it shows the imagination of Calvin. I'm guessing this shows a lot of the author (Bill Watterson) and things he dreamed of....

Calvin spent several strips explaining Hobbes was a "real tiger" to little Susie Derkins (girl in the comic strip).

This is shown as in the comic strip when Calvin see's it, Hobbes is 'alive' and much bigger than him (larger than life). When his parents or others are in the scene, Hobbes has the appearance of a much smaller stuffed animal. (actual size of stuffed animal).

Here is a perfect example of how Hobbes is seen as a "live tiger" by Calvin, but when his mother sees Hobbes, he's shown as a stuff animal and looses his animation and Calvin has to carry him (like any child would).
